This very special bracelet was hand crafted in 18K yellow-gold in Italy during the mid to late 19th c. to commemorate a wealthy traveler's Grand Tour on the European continent. The raised lettering spells out ROMA on one side and there is a detailed geometric pattern on the reverse. It has a bloomed gold finish.
There are two gold batons on either side of the bangle. Another unique feature of this time period. The baton on the left side of the "R" pulls out allowing the bracelet to open. The other side is the hinge and the baton is decorative.
This bangle is exceptional not only because it is hard to find, but also because it embodies the style of the time. It reflects the desire to travel, learn, and explore which was the heart of the Grand Tour. ROMA (Rome) was a key destination and usually the Grand Finale of the Grand Tour. Lastly, it has hand-crafted fine gold granulation and twisted gold wire work that is the epitome of the Etruscan Revival style made famous by the important Italian jeweler Castellani in his Roman salon and workshops. This kind of detail and workmanship would be costly and hard to reproduce today.
