About Spinels

Spinels come in a wide variety of colors, pink to red, orange, blue, violet, purple. The Vietnamese Spinel was initially discovered at Luc Yen (Yen Bai Province) and Quy Chau (Nghe An), at the same time as the ruby and sapphire finds. (Source GIA, GEMSTONES FROM VIETNAM: AN UPDATE).

Gem experts say that Spinels, due to their high refractive index, are a unique blend of the sparkle found in diamonds and the concentration of color found in colored gemstones.

The most famous spinel was thought to have been another stone entirely. The uncut red spinel called the Black Prince’s Ruby was long thought, as its name suggests, to be a Ruby. It is the centerpiece of England's Imperial State Crown (last worn by Queen Elizabeth II). It was not until the 17th century that a gemologist in the process of an appraisal determined that the gem was in fact a Spinel.
