Antique: Victorian "Shooting Stars" Pocket Watch

SKU: #PG759

This is a Demi-Hunter pocket watch, engraved on both sides with a pattern of stars. On one side, there is a 10-point center star surrounded by multiple 5-point stars that softly sparkle against a background of swirling rope. On the other side, five gold stars circle the crystal.

The pocket watch was made by the American Waltham Watch Co. between 1885-1899 and is rolled gold. No modifications have been made, but a bail has been attached so that both the chain and pocket watch can be worn together or with other pieces. The bail is in a solid 14 Ct gold and can be removed, upon request, prior to shipping, if you'd prefer it without. It's being shown with a antique gold link chain in available our Necklaces & Chains collection.

About Rolled Gold

Rolled Gold is made by sandwiching together two pieces of gold on either side of base-metal, possibly brass. The pieces were soldered together under high pressure and high temperature in specially constructed ovens. The composite 3-layer piece was then rolled through high-pressure rolling mills until the desired thickness was reached. The gold layers could consist of 10-karat, 14-karat or 18-karat gold. While this process produced a thicker layer of gold than electro-plating.

About the Demi-Hunter Pocket Watch

The Demi-Hunter is not fully enclosed, a portion of the dial is visible through a small window. The purpose of the design is so that one can easily tell the time without having to open the watch case. This provides the convenience of an open-face watch with the protection of a hunter-case.
